We have identified the potential of the Collyhurst site as a place with a strong topographic character. The urban potential is intensified along Rochdale Road, which provides a good connection to the center of Manchester. The intervention is focused in revitalizing the disused tower blocks by the new proposed architectural expression that reveals their interesting spatial arrangement as an elongated triangle. Their higher asimmetric profile transforms them into urban markers that point towards the southwest and the skyline of Manchester in the horizon.
The activity and character of Dalton street is intensified by a variety of architectural interventions. We propose a series of retail units in front of Newtown and Bucknell court thet will increase the flow of people into the site . The retail activities are followed by sports facilities and workshops placed around access courtyards facing each other. The sports centre can be easily reached from the future Metrolink station.
The activity and character of Burton street is intensified by a row of live-work housing units facing the new landscape proposal on the natural plateau that overlooks the river Irk .
We propose to enhance the topographic potential of this natural place with thematic gardens and a children playground for the use of the whole community. The slope down to the river will become a nature reserve crossed with narrow pathways.
